Technology changes by the minute. Many of my favorite technologies are so prolific at adapting to current trends it reminds me of having Triplets with ADD. There is just no way to keep up with it all.
Using common sense helps. Learn one technique well and build on that. The development we do for the web is done using a variety of 'click together' techniques. We have the Client side with many flavors of possibilities. Today I would recommend JavaScript/JQuery, but 3 years from now that answer may have changed. Server Side could be .NET or PHP, both good choices. Others may suggest Java Servlets or Perl for reasons they feel strongly about. It's a lot like Sauce on your Pasta, a matter of taste.
